Manila Cathedral: Intramuros, Manila

The Manila Cathedral
The Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica is informally known as the Manila Cathedral. It is a Roman Catholic basilica located inside Intramuros, Manila. The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, the Principal Patroness of the Philippines.

The Manila Cathedral is the ecclesiastical seat of the Archdiocese of Manila. In Spanish colonial times, it was the seat of the Spanish Archbishop of Manila, who had jurisdiction over the entire archipelago.

It is located in Plaza de Roma inside the "walled city". The cathedral was originally a parish church owned and governed by the Diocese of Mexico in 1571, until it became a separate diocese on Febuary 6, 1579 upon the issuance of the papa bull, Illus Fulti Praesido, by Pope Gregory XIII.

The cathedral was damaged and destroyed several times since the original structure was built in 1581. The eight and current instance of the cathedral was completed in 1958.

"The Main Altar"

The Manila Cathedral is the only church in the Philippines to become a minor basilica through the Father's own motion - motu propio - a personal decision that came without any prompting from any other source. Churches elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica, in many instances are outstanding for their architectural and artistic preeminence.
